Harford Style Winter Bridal 2016 Fashion Editorial

Harford Style Magazine’s Winter Bridal issue is out!  I had the privilege of working on the fairytale fashion editorial with visionary and photographer, Amy Jones.  The Brass Giraffe’s vintage gowns and jewelry are featured alongside Amanda Ritchey Bridal and Two Back Flats (bespoke headpieces).  In the Fall, you may have caught some behind the scenes action from the shoot if you follow us on Instagram.  Now, I’m proud to show you the full editorial.  If you’re local to Harford County, be sure to grab your copy in print!

Amy approached me with the fairytale theme and overall concept for the shoot.  I was elated that she asked me to be involved, provide the vintage dresses, and assist with styling.  Taking the concept into consideration, I pulled several gowns and pieces of vintage jewelry from my stock that I felt were fitting.  Once the models arrived, we started mixing and matching.  Adding hair and make-up completed the look and pull it all together.

In addition to fashion styling, I got a taste of prop styling on this shoot.  The vintage furniture (aside from the white chaise) is from my personal collection.  Adding accents of gold seemed fitting for the whimsical style that we wanted to convey.  Nesting tables paired with a tufted chair create the perfect tea party scene for the Alice in Wonderland look.  Working on a beautiful Fall day in Harford County, I helped to set up vignettes in the woods to create the most magical shoot I’ve worked on thus far.

Stay tuned for some more behind the scenes magic coming in another post!

Happy Thanksgiving — I’m Thankful for You!

thankful and grateful from the brass giraffe

Thank you to everyone who has supported The Brass Giraffe!  I couldn’t do it without you.  You are such an integral part of my business — not only as customers, but as friends, motivators, and inspiring individuals.  As an entrepreneur, I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to connect with many talented individuals in a variety of fields.  Thank you to everyone who has helped me grow on my journey of owning a small business.  I’m so appreciative to be able to follow my dream.

On this Thanksgiving, take the time to reflect and be grateful for all that you have.  Cherish your family.  Let your friends know that you care.  Hug your dog (or your cat, flying squirrel, whatever).  Let them know that they are loved.  Be kind and caring.  Go the extra mile — (unless you’re running the Turkey Trot.  You should probably just stop at the finish line and go have yourself a sandwich).  Reminisce with your elders and write things down.  Hold memories close to your heart.  Take time to actually enjoy and celebrate Thanksgiving.  You don’t know when life will throw a curve ball and things will drastically change.

Life isn’t about the material things — (yes, I know we all love deals on electronics etc.), but be thankful for what you already have.  In recent years, Thanksgiving has turned into the night before Black Friday or the countdown before Christmas.  Yes, I run a store that sells material things, but to me it’s the customers that matter.  I care deeply about the level of customer service that I offer.  I don’t want you to buy something if it doesn’t make you happy or isn’t the right gift for your friend.  Your purchase should make a positive impact on your life!  I want you to dress with confidence and hope that you will consider the small business owners this season.  The Brass Giraffe is not a big company.  It’s mainly just me, but I care about you as a person.  One of the best parts of my job is hearing about your experience and seeing where my items end up.  When a customer tells me they absolutely adore their item, it makes my day.  So on Small Business Saturday and the other days leading up until Christmas, please shop small and make an impact on an independent business owner.  Trust me, they’ll be very thankful for it.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”  — John Fitzgerald Kennedy

The Brass Giraffe – Vintage 1960s Pea Coat for Fall

I know yesterday was close to 70 degrees in Baltimore, but don’t wait until you’re freezing to pick out a coat!

This 1960s wool pea coat is the perfect addition to your Fall/Winter wardrobe.  Don’t be afraid of bold colors for Fall.  There isn’t any reason to be drab, just because the air is crisp.  Pair it with jeans, a sweater, and tall boots or ear it over a dress and tights. Whatever you do, grab a cup of hot cider to go along with it!  Find it in The Brass Giraffe Vintage Etsy shop for $110.  It’s made of handwoven tweed and pure wool in Ireland — size is close to a Medium.  You just don’t see that kind of quality anymore!  Read more about it and find it here in our shop!

I’m headed back to the good ol’ stomping grounds — Fallston High School.  Come shop The Brass Giraffe in person at the Fallston High School Arts and Crafts fair in the cafeteria on Thursday, October 29 from 5-8pm.  I’ll be set up like a little pop-up shop with new items, vintage pieces, handmade bags, and pieces from some of my fantastic designer friends!  From what I hear, there will be 32 vendors and Prigel family creamery will be serving their delicious ice cream!

In my space, you’ll find a handful of vintage clothing pieces (maybe even a few special sale items that’d be great for Halloween!); new apparel items; handmade leather key chains and bags; things for baby; and the coolest handmade wine glasses by my friend at H.Sipes Studio!  Get a glimpse of how The Brass Giraffe is evolving!

Here’s a preview of what I’ll have in store!

Hunting for the Perfect Space

Yes, you read that headline correctly.  The Brass Giraffe is hunting for a space.  Working from home is just not working at all.  As you may have noticed, the creativity has lapsed and the photographs aren’t pouring in.  I was in a rut and then I started to look around.  As of right now, I can’t give too much away.  In fact, I don’t even know that much.  All I know is that I need to get out of this house in order to be productive.

architecture

Inspiring architecture. No, it’s not my new space, but wouldn’t that be awesome?

Working from home is both a blessing and curse.  You don’t need to deal with a daily commute.  You don’t even need to get out of your pjs, but there lies the problem.  As you try to concentrate, the vacuuming, dishes, and laundry stare you in the face, taunting you.  You can try to ignore it, but inevitably you throw clothes into the washer because eventually you’ll need something decent to put on besides yoga pants.  Then your comfy Ikea chair, the place where you seek solace in the morning sipping coffee becomes a source of stress.  You shake as you sit down to work on marketing projects on your laptop.  You go out on a date and come home to more stress seeing all that you didn’t accomplish and find yourself checking emails at midnight.  Romantic, right?  The line between home and work tends to blur and frankly, I need to get out of this house.   You can only make small talk with the checkout girl at the grocery store so many times before you’ve overstepped your bounds — or this may be the most ingenious way to make friends in adulthood?  You decide.  I on the other hand am getting out.

The Brass Giraffe is evolving.  We’re becoming more than vintage and we’re getting back to our independently made roots.  I need a studio to work.  I’d love a place for customers to pop in and shop.  My favorite thing in the world is interacting with people and the dress forms are a quiet group of gals.  It’s lonely in my studio and I hate it.

My shopmates keep their opinions to themselves, so I guess that’s a blessing.

So where have we been?  Lately, I’ve been busy.  I realize the Facebook page looks like I took a major break, but that’s far from the case.  I’ve been collaborating with some of the top professionals in our area on photo shoots, conducting market research, and even looking at a few spaces for rent!  I’ve met a slew of interesting people and I can’t wait to show you where The Brass Giraffe is headed.  Stick with me.  I promise it will be worth it!

Vintage Palm Beach Wrap Dress

Resort wear is my favorite — relaxed, at ease, and always in style.  Since it’s a muggy day here in Baltimore, I decided to brighten up the blog with some images from our trip to Palm Beach.  I purchased this dress at a sweet little vintage shop in Hampden (Baltimore).  When I saw the print, I instantly knew I had to try it on!  I’ve been working towards wearing bold prints lately.  I was afraid of prints for a long time, especially voluminous ones, but I’ve decided to step out of the box.  I’m so glad I did.  This dress was a fast favorite over the Summer.  If you wear a bold print, just watch the accessories and jewelry that you pair it with.  Keep it on the minimal side if you’re wearing a large print like this one.  Check out these tropical photos from our trip and see how you can throw a vintage dress into your wardrobe.

We were so lucky to be able to travel with our good friends Michelle and Rob.  They were the entire reason that we took a break from of our everyday lives to kick back and enjoy some downtime.  Thank you for forcing us out of our routine!

Michelle took all of these posed photos just outside of our tropical hotel.  I think the hotel staff thought we were nuts!  She knows just the right way to stand and the best angles for photos.  After years of working out and yoga, she has nailed perfect posture.  She’s the type of person who’s kind, funny, caring, and a ball of energy.  She’s also the kind of friend who isn’t afraid to tell you stand up straighter and suck it in, so the photo comes out looking phenomenal!  Thank goodness for good, honest, friends like her!  The only thing that we decided that I would need to change about the dress would be to add a snap where it wraps around.  One big gust of wind and I would’ve flashed the entire hotel!

You don’t have to be on vacation to wear a dress like this.  Just find something that makes you feel confident and wear it in your everyday life.  With it being Fall wedding season, find a vintage dress to wear to one of your upcoming weddings.  Stand out from the crowd, but don’t outshine the bride.  There’s something that makes you feel good when you know no one else in the room will be wearing what you have on.  The day I wore this dress was  just a day that we had spent relaxing on the beach and then headed down for some grilling at the hotel.  It wasn’t a major event — just a relaxing evening spent with great friends.

The Brass Giraffe at SoBo A GoGo in Federal Hill

We really had a blast spending time with all of you in Federal Hill!  It was a hectic weekend, but I’ve recovered from a bit of exhaustion and finally have the time to post some photos!  Recovered from exhaustion sounds like a phrase from the 1800s; hence part of why I love vintage so much!

If you checked out the space, you found more than vintage at The Brass Giraffe!  I am so excited to be working with some local Maryland artisans.  We sold out of our crab prints (handmade by a local Towson artist) and our Baltimore themed wine glasses by H. Sipes Studio were quite the hit!  To keep the little giraffes warm, I had handmade blankets (made locally by Sopo Boutique) and the cutest hats I’ve ever seen, with antlers and fox ears (coming soon to our website)!

If you couldn’t tell from the market, The Brass Giraffe is evolving.  I introduced a few new lines of apparel along with the vintage mix.  The lines were well received; however my fitting room didn’t work out!  We had tons of jewelry and sold one our handbags to the sweetest customer.  She put her items right in the bag and went off to enjoy the festival!

To all who stopped by, thank you so much for your feedback.  I greatly appreciate all of your thoughts on my little space.  To everyone who asked where my shop is located — we’re here online with a shopping cart in the works.  Thank you to Federal Hill Main Street for having us and to Baltimore for being amazing.  We’ll be seeing you again, soon!  Much love to my new friends, customers, and fellow artisans!

Thanks Baltimore for a Great Event!

Thank-You-Baltimore

We had such a good time in Federal Hill for their SoBo a Go-Go street festival today.  It was wonderful to meet so many fantastic people.  Thank you for shopping small and taking interest in my business as I build my boutique.  Photos from the booth to come, but for now I need some beauty sleep!  Thanks for stopping by, shopping, chatting, and sharing advice on growing my shop.  I greatly appreciate the support!

It was a lovely day for a grand opening!  Evy + Ro officially opened their historic door in downtown Chesapeake City, Maryland this afternoon.  The store is beautifully merchandised in hues of teal, coral, and yellow situated in a historic building on Bohemia Avenue (formerly the Post Office).

It was bustling with customers this afternoon when myself, my mom, and my grandmother popped in to show our support and shop local.  Over the last month, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the owner, Lauren Bergstrom.  She invited me to be involved in her store, Evy + Ro and I’m so excited to be a part of this journey with her.  The Brass Giraffe will be providing vintage clothing, new scarves, handmade leather bags and accessories, and an array of jewelry in the Evy + Ro space.  Here’s some photos from our day out on the Bay and some snapshots of the store.

Naturally, I wore vintage to the opening.  It was the perfect excuse to squeeze in one last wear of my white, floral vintage dress which was given to me by my Aunt.  She used to wear it in the late 70s early 80s.  I styled the look with a vintage beaded necklace, bracelets, vintage earrings, and casual Rainbow leather flip flops.  I carried my handmade croc patent clutch which has just enough room for all the important stuff!  On the way home from Chesapeake City, we stopped by Broom’s Bloom Dairy in Harford County to admire the sunflowers and eat some ice cream.  It was a perfect Saturday, if you ask me!
